Second week of the outreach phase - Meetings kick off on a positive
note
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
June 30, 2010
The second week of the
constitutional outreach phase kicked off on a positive note with
reports that meetings particularly in the Mashonaland central province
were well attended and held according to schedule.
The Coalition
spoke to a monitor who attended a meeting at Gwaza Primary School
Bindura, Mashonaland Central Province today who stated that approximately
315 people attended the meeting, which started at 0800hrs.
He further noted that
the meeting was advertised in advance while participants were airing
views without reading from scripts provided by their political parties
as had become the norm countrywide. In addition, the presence of
the police managed to ensure order at the meeting with no cases
of violence or intimidation reported.
The Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association (ZimRights), through its Constitutional
Bulletin however reported that the situation is different in Masvingo
where meetings in Chivi District were starting as late as 1pm owing
to logistical problems affecting COPAC.
Crisis in Zimbabwe
Coalition reiterates the need for COPAC to ensure full participation
of citizens during the constitution
making process. The Coalition also calls upon political parties
to preach the gospel of peace tolerance as the output from this
process is critical in defining the future of generations to come.
