Maguwu 'snatched' from remand prison
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
June 14, 2010

The Center for Research and Development (CRD) Director, Farai Maguwu, who was remanded in custody by Harare Magistrate, Donald Ndirowei on the 10th of June 2010 was yesterday, 11 June 2010 'snatched' from the Harare Remand prison by members of the Harare Central Law and Order section under instruction from the notorious Detective Inspector Dowa.

According to Maguwu's lawyer Mr. Tinoziva Bere, police officers from the Law and Order Section moved Maguwu from his prison cell at the Remand Prison without his or his lawyer's consent and outside the knowledge of the Harare Magistrate's court which remanded him in custody. Probed by human rights lawyers, Ms. Beatrice Mtetwa and Mr. Trust Maanda on Maguwu's disappearance, Detective Inspector Dowa, who is notorious for perpetrating gross human rights abuses, admitted to authorizing police officers to move Maguwu from the remand prison but refused to disclose his whereabouts.

Mtetwa and Maanda managed to locate Maguwu at the Matapi Police station in Mbare, Harare, whose prison was declared unfit for human habitation and remains a haven for human rights abuses against prisoners. Prison officials at Matapi initially refused to allow the two lawyers access to their client stating that they needed clearance from Law and Order.

The Catalyst has however just received information that Maguwu is currently being moved to Harare Central Police Station Law and Order Section in the company of his lawyers.
