Harassment and eviction of farm workers on the increase

Zimbabwe has witnessed an increase in the cases of harassment and eviction of farm workers particularly in the Mashonaland West province, according to the General Agricultural and Plantation Workers Union of Zimbabwe (GAPWUZ).

GAPWUZ provincial Organizer for Mashonaland West Mrs. Nyachowe reported that on the 26th of March 2010 at Up Roams Farm in Chinhoyi owned bya Mr. Mpofu, the Workers' Committee Secretary General Mr. Pardon Chiwara was assaulted and evicted together with his family for representing workers' grievances. Members of the army, who were allegedly bused from One Brigade in Bulawayo are purportedly stationed at the farm where they are intimidating workers to quell any dissent. The matter was reported to Chinhoyi police but nothing was done about it.

Mrs. Nyachowe also reported that at Nyamatawa farm owned by war veteran, Mr Tsvaku Murozvi, the GAPWUZ secretariat, was denied access to the farm where they intended to convene a meeting with farm workers. The purpose of the meeting was to create room for the workers to air their grieviences and map a way forward to end the troubles they are facing at the farm. The workers were barred from attending the meeting organised by GAPWUZ.
