ZINASU president arrested

39 other students arrested in nation wide demonstrations

The President of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), Joshua Chinyere was arrested today, 29 March 2010 during a peaciful deminstration under the theme, 'March 29 my vote spoke; Igniting students' voices' marking the first annivesary of the decisive March 29 2008 polls. Chinyere's whereabouts remaining unknown.

During the demonstrarion staged in Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo and Gweru, students were demanding Free and Quality education, an end to student's victimization, accessible loans and grants, full implementation of the Inter Party Political Agreement (IPA), revision of the cadetship scheme and a new democratic constitution. A total of 1 200 students marched nationwide while 39 were arrested.

Below is a brief of what transpired in the four cities;

Harare

In Harare 250 students led by Joshua Chinyere, Vice President Georgina Sango and secretary for publicity, Wisdom Mgagara took to the streets and marched towards Parliament building where they intended to hand in a petition to the Speaker of parliament, Honourable Lovemore Moyo. Their attempts were however foiled by heavily armed anti-riot police who assaulted Chinyere, Sango and a student, Robert Chere before arresting Chinyere. It is still unclear where Chinyere is being held with frantic efforts to locate him at Harare Central and Avondale Police Stations reaching a dead end. 31 students were arrested, 20 prior to the demonstration and 11 during the March. They are currently incarcerated at Harare Central Police Station.

Bulawayo

The Bulawayo march attended by 400 students and led by Secretary General Grant Tabvureyi and Sports Secretary Patric Danga went ahead without any disruptions. However prior to the march, ZINASU regional officer Melissa Ndlovu was detained for 1 hour and questioned over the purpose of the march. The students managed to hand in a petition to Bulawayo Metropolitan Governor, Cain Mathema.

Masvingo

350 students led by ZINASU Treasurer General, Zivanai Muzorodze and Secretary for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Alec Tabe staged a demonstration in Masvingo leading to the arrest of eight students. Names of the arrested are yet to be confirmed.

Gweru

200 students staged a successful demonstration led by Faith Chamba the ZINASU secretary for International Relations and Artwell Chidya, Secretary for education. No arrests were made.
