Petition for the investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of politically motivated violence committed in the wake of the national elections held during 2008

To: The President of Zimbabwe
The Prime Minister of Zimbabwe
The Ministers of Home Affairs
The Ministers of Justice and Legal Affairs
The Commissioner General of Police
The Attorney General

We the members of the Youth Committee of the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition,

Deeply concerned those horrendous acts of violence and torture were witnessed in Zimbabwe during the year 2008,

Gravely concerned that these acts often resulted in barbarous acts of murder, rape, destruction and looting of property, massive internal displacements and other forms of inhuman degrading an cruel treatment to the citizens of Zimbabwe across the political divide,

Having noted with concern that little has been done to bring the perpetrators to book and deeply concerned that this breeds a cultures of impunity,

Desiring to foster a culture of respect for human life, dignity and the realization of individual and collective human security in a nation that lives up to the true meaning of democracy and civilization,

1. Immediately appoint an independent commission of inquiry to investigate into the causes, perpetrators and extent of politically motivated violence witnessed in Zimbabwe in the year 2008 and make appropriate recommendations to the Government of Zimbabwe.

2. To expeditiously act upon the recommendations of the so appointed independent commission of inquiry.

3. To make the findings of the commission public.

4. To prosecute all who may guilty of the heinous acts of violence according to the laws of Zimbabwe.

5. Provide facilities for the offering of socio-psycho support to the victims of the politically motivated violence as well as cater for their immediate needs accessioned by their losses during these moments of madness in 2008.

6. Urge all political parties to shun and desist from violence in all forms.

7. Take stringent measures against all perpetrators of politically motivated violence as a deterrent measure against would be perpetrators of violence.
