    Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition

    Murehwa

    With the objective of ensuring that the people effectively participate in the Constitution Making Process, Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition held a community outreach meeting in Murehwa at Rhodes Shopping Centre on the 4th of March 2010.

    The Coalition team was informed that ZANU-PF supporters were misinforming people that only people selected by the Chief and those trained are supposed to participate during the Constitutional Outreach meetings.

    The following issues were raised:

    Founding Principles of the Constitution

    • The Constitution should be the Supreme Law of the Nation

    Separation of Powers

    • Parliament should be given the power to impeach the President
    • The Executive organs of the State should operate independently and ensure checks and balances

    Executive Organs of the State

    • Two term limits for the President
    • There should be one President and one Vice-President only
    • The Cabinet should be a maximum of 15 people
    • The Senate should be abolished
    • Governors should be reduced

    Citizenship and Bill of Rights

    • There should be accessible and free maternal health
    • There should be free education up to secondary level
    • The elderly and differently able should be given security allowances
    • Dual Citizenship should be allowed

    Religion

    • Religious practices should not infringe in Human Rights

    Women and Gender Issues

    • Women should be given equal opportunities as men
    • Both parents should be able to acquire birth registrations and passports with or without the other


    Youth, Land, Natural Resources and Empowerment

    • Government should create employment opportunities
    • There should be a Land audit and the Constitution should ensure single farm ownership
    • Youth camps should be vocational centres

    Labour

    • Workers' salaries should be above the poverty datum line

    Public Finance

    • Management of Public Finance should be transparent
    • Public Finance should be used to buy antiretroviral drugs to develop communities

    Elections

    • Contesting parties should be given equal airtime in the print and electronic media

    Freedom Fighters

    • Freedom fighters should be respected and acknowledged
