NCA statement on the attacks on the ZINASU leadership
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
March 09, 2010

The National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) strongly condemns the violent attacks on the ZINASU leadership by MDC youths at the memorial service of Amai Susan Tsvangirai at the Glamis Stadium on Saturday 6 March 2010.

Shockingly this happened at a time when we were all remembering the life of a heroine and a proponent of democracy, Amai Tsvangirai. The NCA was further surprised to note that the attacks happened in the full glare of the MDC leadership including its President, Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai.

The attacks left four members of the ZINASU executive injured including President Tafadzwa Mugwadi, Secretary General Kurayi Hoyi, Treasurer Tafadzwa Kutya and the Secretary for legal Affairs Archieford Mudzengi (critical condition) and they received medical treatment at Avenues Clinic on Saturday 8 March 2010.

As the NCA, we do not condone such barbaric and sadistic behavior especially coming from the MDC, a key ally in the pro-democracy movement. The behavior by the MDC youths exhibited on Saturday is typical of, if not worse than that of ZANU PF thugs.

One wonders if this is the behavior that the MDC has been taught by their new found partners in the inclusive government.

We urge the MDC especially its leader Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai to openly denounce this violent behavior and unacceptable behavior.

We hope that such barbaric acts will be a thing of the past from today going forward. On behalf of the NCA, I wish the ZINASU leaders a speedy recovery and hope that they will continue carrying out their mandate in defending academic freedoms, the fight for good governance and the struggle for a genuine people driven constitution that will usher in a democratically elected government after a free and fair election.
