Statement on the political violence in Epworth
Centre for Peace Initiatives in Africa (CPIA)
February 23, 2010

1) It is hardly a week since the CPIA High Level Seminar on Future Elections and Conflict Prevention adopted a communiqué supporting the establishment of a CPIA Early Warning System (EWS) on Violence that violence breaks out in Epworth . We are in the middle of consultations to establish such a system which was to be announced in ten days. Because of the violence in Epworth, we have been compelled to act before we had completed our consultations.

2) CPIA has requested two of its Eminent persons joined by a religious leader who attended the Seminar to immediately approach the political parties concerned to take the necessary steps to control the consequences that could emanate from such violence.

3) We also request any participant of the Seminar, especially those from Political Parties to assist in ensuring that no inflammatory statements are issued that could worsen the situation.
