All
civil servants agree to a national stay away
Bulawayo
Agenda
February 08, 2010
In the bid to
provide information to its networks, stakeholders and other interested
parties, Bulawayo Agenda is reintroducing the Daily Agenda; a compilation
of alerts from the chapters and its network of contacts located
in areas where Bulawayo Agenda operates from. The Daily Agenda offers
an alternative source of information from the mainstream media that
is often restricted in terms of outreach as it focuses on the grassroots.
The Daily Agenda
will provide information on critical governance and developmental
issues. It is our hope that the information provided will be useful
to our constituency of readership, particularly the leaders at the
local level and civil society practitioners, in informing and shaping
their choice of developmental objectives and initiatives.
Bulawayo
- Civil servants have unanimously agreed to a national
stay away to force government to resolve their problems. At a meeting
held in Bulawayo all civil servants advised government through the
Ministry of Public Service that they were rejecting the US$13 increment
for housing and transport. Some of the recommendations set out in
the meeting included;
- Government
should pay basic salaries, housing and transport allowances which
are informed by the Poverty Datum Line.
- That government
should direct state enterprises like ZESA, Tel one and Council
to cancel outstanding debts and review tariffs to regional standards.
- That heads
of state enterprises should convene an urgent meeting with Apex
Council and mutually agree on a new tariff regime.
- That all
government workers shall embark on a nationwide job stay away
with effect form Friday 5 February 2010.
Bulawayo
- The Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Thokozani Khupe
has introduced a Women Economic Development Plan aimed at empowering
the female populace, through the provision of a micro finance system
which will cover all 10 Provinces of the country. She said that
every woman in Zimbabwe will be able to apply for a loan via financial
institutions for the setting up of small businesses.
Plumtree
- Young in people in Plumtree have set up an initiative
meant to keep youths from the street. The initiative comes after
young people have noted that they do not have self sustainable projects
to help develop their communities. They also be cried the increase
in the number of young people going to the neighbouring countries
of Botswana and South Africa without the necessary qualifications.
They have however noted that despite setting up the project they
do not have enough funds to buy sporting equipment which will keep
the youths active.
