Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
September 23, 2009
Whilst the Organ on National
Healing and the principles to the Global Political Agreement (GPA)
continue preaching the gospel of reconciliation, ZANU PF militia
have begun a fresh wave of victimization against Movement for Democratic
Change (MDC) supporters and civil society activists, The Catalyst
has learnt.
Harare
On Saturday 19 September 2009 at around 9pm, Kudzai Mutarangi a
Mabelreign based activist was assaulted at Greencroft shopping centre
by ZANU PF militia for wearing a Crisis Coalition T-shirt written
"SAY NO TO KARIBA DRAFT". The T-shirt was torn and Mr.
Mutarangi was forced to wear a ZANU PF t-shirt.
Headlands
15 September 2009 - Brigadier Mujaji deployed 8 heavily armed
soldiers led by Sergeant Mukoni to Karoi Farm owned by Charles Lock.
Brigadier Mujaji is alleged to have snatched the farm keys claiming
possession of an offer letter. Mr. Charles has been forced to suspend
operations at the farm.
Chiweshe,
Chaona area
The Coalition received reports from Chiweshe where three suspected
ZANU PF supporters, Isodore Gwanzura, Elijah Marufu and Love Zimbiti
are driving an Isuzu twin cab, registration number AAO 5046 around
the Chaona area victimizing and terrorizing MDC supporters. The
three are allegedly claiming that the inclusive government is only
functional in Harare and demanding that MDC supporters surrender
their memberships.
Marambapfungwe
The CIO and some senior ZANU PF members are allegedly forcing MDC
supporters to surrender their membership cards in Murambapfungwe.
On Saturday 12 September 2009, ZANU PF militia brutally assaulted,
tortured and forced Mrs. Machokoto, an MDC supporter to relinquish
her MDC membership as a sign of her allegiance to ZANU PF. Mrs.
Machokoto has allegedly fled her home for fear of further victimization.
On 16 September 2009, an MDC supporter, Peter Katsokonya was brutally
assaulted by 4 men, Willy Mupukuta, Ndinyarei Mupukuta, Thozi Murenza
and Kavhumbura in Murehwa North, Chief Chinyere ward. Katsokonya
is receiving treatment in Harare.
Mwenzi
Members of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) who were deployed last
year to Mwenzi under Operation Maguta hosted meetings at the Mwenzi
District Hall on the 16th of September 2009 where they campaigned
for the Kariba Draft Constitution and denounced the inclusive government.
The soldiers allegedly told Mwenzi residents that Zimbabwe cannot
be ruled by any party except for ZANU PF citing the example of the
March 2008 elections where ZANU PF lost to MDC but refused to relinquish
power.
Bindura
In Bindura, Concession a base has allegedly been established at
Pagomo Taven, a bar belonging to ZANU PF Member of Parliament, Richard
Chirungwe. The purpose of the base, according to sources is to persecute
anyone who speaks against the Kariba Draft Constitution crafted
by ZANU PF and MDC. ZANU PF has, on countless occasions supported
the draft as it retains the executive Presidency and remains mum
on justiciable Bill of Rights.
Mberengwa
Bases have allegedly been established in Mberengwa where night vigils
are allegedly taking place under the stewardship of ZANU PF supporters
to 'conscientise' the community on the Kariba Draft
and how it should be used as the key reference point in the constitution
making process. The MDC reports that the setting up of bases has
spread to other areas including Shamva and Wedza.
Failure by government
to decisively deal with perpetrators of post election violence has
adversely affected progress towards the realization of peace and
unity in Zimbabwe. As long as the government continues to sideline
issues of transitional justice, Zimbabwe will experience a reincarnation
of the post 29 March violence.
