Crisis in Chishayabvudzi, Guruve
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
May 12, 2009

In line with its mandate of providing a platform for Zimbabweans to air their views on socio-economic and political issues, Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition held a community meeting in Guruve at Chishayabvudzi Shopping Centre on the 11th of May 2009. The objective of the meeting was to interrogate the Global Political Agreement (GPA) with particular emphasis on the provisions of national healing and constitutional reform.

Panelists included Mr. Chigonere of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T), Mr. Mandiwanzira of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) and Mr. Jena of Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights).

Challenges faced by people in Chishayabvudzi:

1. The road networks surrounding the area are bad.
2. There are few buses servicing the area.
3. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has not yet paid farmers for the produce it procured in 2008.
4. The neighborhood security (set up during the June 2008 elections) continues to harass and intimidate the populace.

With regards to the inclusive government the people of Chishayabvudzi highlighted the following:

1. The government should make the constitutional reform process participatory and inclusive.
2. The government should educate, protect and promote people's rights and uphold the rule of law.
3. The people of Chishayabvudzi challenged government to stop the continued incarceration of human rights activists and adhere to the GPA guidelines.
4. The Ministry of Education should reduce school fees in rural areas since foreign currency is difficult to acquire.
5. The government should put mechanisms in place to ensure that victims of politically motivated violence are assisted and justice takes its course.
6. The police should be non partisan, objective and must uphold the rule of law.
