Matopo

Humanitarian NGOs operating in the area have announced that this month they will distribute the last batch of food hampers to the villagers. These NGOs which include World Vision and Christian Care normally stop offering food aid between March and May every year because people would have started harvesting from their fields. However concerns have been raised that the months of April and May might be difficult ones for the villagers as the produce in their fields is not yet ready for harvesting. Although the area received good rains this year compared to previous years, most villagers delayed commencing their farming due to a shortage of inputs.

Hwange

The Hwange Colliery Company is now paying every employee in foreign currency rather than management personnel only. Although most banks in the town have been giving people cash without experiencing any problems, ZABG has been having cash shortages. As a result of these shortages the bank has resorted to limiting clients to withdrawing US$40 (forty United States Dollars) a day. People have also been forced to queue at the bank everyday so that they withdraw their salaries.

Meanwhile, Hwange residents have complained about the exorbitant prices retail shops are charging in foreign currency. They have noted with concern that prices in the mining town are almost double the prices in Bulawayo. A two litre bottle of Mazoe orange for example is going for ZAR40 (forty South African rand) whereas in Bulawayo it is being sold for between 25 and 30 rand.
