Police
disrupt NCA demo
Zimbabwe
Peace Project
November 11, 2008
At 1300 hours, about 50 National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA) members demonstrated at the corner
of Leopold Takawira Street and Nelson Mandela Streets demanding
a new constitution. Within a few minutes about 12 riot police officers
arrived in a Mazda B1800 truck. The police who were armed with baton
sticks and a tear gas shotgun started driving the demonstrators
away. The demonstrators retreated for some metres and then they
started throwing stones at the police. The police officers had to
run away.
Reinforcement
riot police had to be called. They arrived within a few minutes
and they were more than twenty in number. They arrived in a lorry
and another Mazda B1800 truck. Upon their arrival the police started
having running battles with the demonstrators. ZPP witnessed the
arrest of 3 people. It seemed the police were having a problem with
identifying the demonstrators because most of the demonstrators
joined in the queues where people were waiting to get money from
the banks nearby.
Bulawayo
ZPP received
a report from the province that 2 people were also arrested for
demonstrating demanding a new constitution.
Mutare
There was another
demonstration in Mutare where 3 people were arrested by the police.
