  • Police nab NCA chairperson ahead of planned demonstrations
    National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
    November 11, 2008

Dr. Lovemore Madhuku, National Chairperson of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), has been detained in advance of NCA's planned demonstrations in five cities across Zimbabwe.

At 6 a.m. on the morning of 11 November 2008, police officers visited the home of Dr. Madhuku. Madhuku was not home and the police departed without ascertaining his location. At 8 a.m. Madhuku received a call from police officials, demanding that he report to Harare Central Police Station. At 11:30am, Madhuku, along with his lawyer Alec Muchadehama, arrived at the police station.

Madhuku is currently in police custody and is not being permitted to attend the demonstration to be held this afternoon in Harare.

The NCA emphatically condemns this unjustified obstruction of the organization's peaceful protest actions. However, the NCA refuses to be intimidated by this illegitimate unwarranted aggression and remains committed to its campaign for democratic reform.

NCA members with gather today in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, Masvingo and Gweru, to campaign for a three point plan aimed at achieving democracy in Zimbabwe. This plan indicates the necessity of:

    1. Transitional Government,
    2. People-Driven Constitution,
    3. Free and Fair Elections. All Zimbabweans committed to the ideals of democracy are encouraged to join NCA's efforts today and in the weeks to come.
