WOZA activists' bail application dismissed
Bulawayo Agenda
October 27, 2008

Bulawayo

WOZA activists, Jenni Williams and Magodonga Mahlangu's bail application was dismissed today on grounds that they are likely to hold more demonstrations if they are released. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) are to file an urgent high court application for the two activists' bail.

Crisis Coalition in conjunction with Bulawayo Agenda held a meeting today at Selbourne Hotel. The attendants raised concern over the dead lock of the talks. In relation to the talks most said they were not expecting any outcome as none of the political parties involved do not want to compromise nor negotiate. It was agreed that people should have demonstrated earlier against the writing of examinations as it was common knowledge that children had not been learning and were in no position to sit for exams. The importance of unity when demonstrating against maladministration was emphasized after attendants passed complaints over reluctance by the public to participate in crucial demonstrations.

Harare

60 members of the Women's Coalition, most of whom wore black and white, have been arrested outside the HICC in Harare while they were waiting for the troika. The women are being held at Harare Central Police Station. Police officers went on to arrest any woman wearing black and white in town.

Plumtree

Central Intelligence Office (CIO) and army personnel were deployed in the town for them to oversee the running of the Grade Seven exams. The Grade Seven exams come at a time when most are not expecting them because most school children have not been learning. Some schools in rural areas did not open on the official school opening day as teachers' salaries could not sustain their grocery and transport fares. For the greater part of the school term, teachers were either on strike or running other errands during working hours in an attempt to generate more money. This is because they are earning meager amounts of money that do not sustain their daily needs.
