The Amnesty International
(AI) has asked the African Union (AU) chairman President Jakaya
Kikwete to intervene in Zimbabwe.
"It is now the
right time for AU chairman to take his position to end the volatile
situation in Zimbabwe," said Samkelo Mokhine, AI representative
based in South Africa.
Mokhine was speaking
to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday ahead of the three-day
exhibition organised to celebrate the courage and determination
of Zimbabwean human rights defenders.
The exhibition is being
brought by the AI in collaboration with East Africa Youth Association
and the Legal Human Rights Centre and is scheduled to start today
at the House of Culture.
The human rights
group urged the AU to help in setting out a clear time limit for
ending the stalled power sharing deal in the central African country.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean
parties resumed talks yesterday aimed at rescuing a power-sharing
deal and state media said the discussions would focus on who gets
control of the finance ministry.
Negotiations, mediated
by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, ended without agreement
on Tuesday.
The government-owned
Herald, said proposals would be tabled on leadership of the ministry
of Finance, crucial to reviving Zimbabwe`s ruined economy and attracting
foreign investment.
Yesterday, the leader
of the breakaway MDC faction Arthur Mutambara was critical of all
sides.
"As leaders,
we're debating the wrong things. The problem in Zimbabwe is a problem
of leadership," he said.
"Mutambara,
Mugabe and Tsvangirai are masquerading as leaders, yet they're musketeers.
I'm here today to put an end to this nonsense. Shame on us."
