Rest in peace President Mwanawasa
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
August 21, 2008

The National Constitutional Assembly wants to join the world of democracies in conveying its deepest condolences to the people of Zambia and the Mwanawasa family over the death of President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa.

President Mwanawasa who died in a Paris military hospital early this week was a champion of democracy in his country and the region at large. He represented a modern day politician with a spirit of tolerance.

The NCA is worried that President Mwanawasa has died at a time when his openness and leadership capabilities are in need as the region grapples to defend democracy in Zimbabwe following the illegitimate June 27 election.

President Mwanawasa will be remembered by the people of Zimbabwe for confronting the Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe head on when he described the country under Mugabe's leadership facing an economic freefall as a 'sinking titanic'.

Mwanawasa soon after the 29 March elections that saw Zimbabwe's lifetime President Robert Mugabe trailing behind Morgan Tsvangirai of the MDC purchasing weapons of mass destructions was bold enough as SADC chair to ask regional countries not to allow the ship from China carrying weapons to allowed to dock at any regional harbor.

The NCA wants to say rest in peace to the soul of a gallant revolutionary and a champion of human and people's rights. Our prayers are that God touches the Zambian people in this time of grief.
