ZEF mourns the death of President Mwanawasa
Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF)
August 20, 2008

Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF), together with many Zimbabweans both in and outside Zimbabwe joins the world in mourning the sudden and unexpected death of His Excellency, Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa. Africa has been robbed of one of its sons. We were very optimistic of President Mwanawasa's leadership in the SADC as his chairmanship exhibited what has been lacking all along in the regional body, which is frankness in confronting issues affecting the continent including tyranny and lack of democracy in Africa.

We remain hopeful that in his place will come someone with his candidness and that he will not be replaced by someone who kowtows Zimbabwean President Mugabe's excesses. The only certain way of remembering President Levy Mwanawasa's contribution to SADC is for the organ to take concrete steps towards resolving the Zimbabwean crisis.

ZEF still remains disappointed with SADC and the AU's inability to take sterner measures against Zimbabwe as crimes against humanity still continue against civilians in that country.
