The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) says it is not going to budge on its demand for real executive power for its leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, in the suspended negotiations that are expected to resume later this week.

Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF rejected the MDC's demand in the negotiations in Pretoria on Monday, offering Tsvangirai only one of three vice-presidencies in the government. The impasse stalled the negotiations, though President Thabo Mbeki said on Tuesday they would resume later this week.

Though Mbeki rarely comments on the secret talks, on Tuesday he indirectly confirmed the hiccup when he said the Zanu-PF and MDC negotiators "will be adjourning shortly for a few days because they want to go back to Harare to consult with their principals about the work that is being done".

Informed sources said that unless Mugabe was prepared to offer Tsvangirai real executive power, the talks would remain deadlocked.

The MDC wants Tsvangirai to be at the helm of any transitional arrangement that might be agreed upon.

Alternatively, it wants Tsvangirai to be executive prime minister with Mugabe demoted to a ceremonial role, although Zanu-PF would have an almost equal number of cabinet ministers as the MDC.
