SACC
calls for stronger action on Zimbabwe
SACC
June 30, 2008
Prof Maluleke, the President
of the SACC today indicated that "We deplore now, as we have
done all along, the violence which preceded and surrounded the Zimbabwe
presidential run-off elections." To this end we forwarded a
dossier of alleged atrocities committed against Zimbabweans in the
run up to the Zimbabwe run-off elections to President Mbeki. He
indicated that action has been taken by the team of generals to
stop the violence.
Mr Eddie Makue, the SACC
General Secretary, stated that "The run-off elections in which
Mr Robert Mugabe ran alone were neither free nor fair, therefore
this presidency is illegitimate."
"We call on African
and other states of the world not to recognize the de facto presidency
of former President Robert Mugabe," Prof Maluleke said.
Maluleke continued, "While
we recognize that further sanctions will hurt the poor and suffering
Zimbabweans we have come to the conclusion that the people of Zimbabwe
are already burdened with untold suffering. The time has come for
all states to apply and intensify universal sanctions against Zimbabwe
as part and parcel of the negotiations for power-sharing in Zimbabwe."
"We call
on SADC and the AU to redouble their efforts towards the formation
of transitional government in which ZANU-PF and the MDC will share
power. Such a government should, amongst other things, bring an
immediate end to the violence and human rights violations while
it negotiates a more stable long term socioeconomic and political
situation," Makue remarked.
