Statement
on the European Parliament hearing on Zimbabwe

On the 28 of May 2008,
the European parliament met to deliberate on the situation in Zimbabwe
H.E. the Ambassador of the Republic of Zimbabwe declined an invitation
extended to him by the European Parliament, stating (without elaborating)
that the meeting was unnecessary at this stage.
His Excellency. Mahamat
Saleh Annadif, Permanent Representative of the African Union to
the European Union stated that the African Union was closely following
the situation in Zimbabwe. He said that they held consultations
and exchanged views with all the key stakeholders and that the AU
was doing everything possible to ensure a fair and fair election.
He said that a substantial presence of the key institutions like
SADC and the AU was central in ensuring a conducive environment
and the respect of the election outcome.
The European Commission
stated that they were also closely following the situation in Zimbabwe.
They said that they were engaged with the AU organs, SADC and other
stakeholders. They welcomed the return of Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai
to Zimbabwe as a very important development and stated that there
was need for the immediate deployment of AU, SADC and PAP Observers.
The Commission is working to identify the kind of humanitarian assistance
that could be given to victims of xenophobic attacks and pledged
further support to the AU and EU in ensuring a free and fair election
in Zimbabwe.
