Condolences,
ZINASU leadership and countdown to People's Convention
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
January 21, 2008
Condolences . . . .
The
board, management and secretariat of Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
offer their condolences to the family and colleagues of distinguished
trade unionist and Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) National
Secretary for Labour, Gertrude Mthombeni who died on Saturday 19
January 2008 in Bulawayo after a short illness.
Mthombeni, who was a
founding member of the MDC, unequivocally fought for a democratic
society in Zimbabwe. Her guidance and courageous contributions in
the fight for democracy will be solely missed by not only her colleagues
and family but by the nation at large. May her soul rest in eternal
peace.
Funeral arrangements
have not yet been finalized but she will be buried in Bulawayo.
ZINASU
elects new leadership
The
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) elected a new National
Executive Council (NEC) on Saturday 19 January 2008 at a congress
held at the River of Life church in Harare. The NEC is responsible
for the coordination, promotion and initiation of the students'
activities through their different portfolios that include education
and research, gender and human rights, international relations among
others.
The Crisis in Zimbabwe
Coalition takes this opportunity to congratulate the incoming leadership
and wish them the best in the struggle for the democratization of
the country. We hope they will be able to continue fostering a spirit
of togetherness among students so as to fight against the suppression
and harassment of students across the country. The coalition wishes
to thank the outgoing executives who have, over the past two years,
defended academic freedoms unabated by the continued state brutality
and student harassment.

Countdown
to the People's Convention . . .
On
Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th of January 2008, civil society
will convene a People's Convention in Harare to chart Zimbabwe's
destiny. The meeting will attract more than 3000 Zimbabweans from
all walks of life who will be instrumental in the critical processes.
The convention
will assess the state of the social, political and economic environment
and how the political parties have responded to such socio-political
and economic failures. The civic organizations will make a stand
and unpack a program that will define the behavior of the civic
movement.
