CPIA
statement on the Kenyan presidential elections 2007
Centre for Peace Initatives in Africa
(CPIA)
January 08, 2008
The Centre for
Peace Initiatives in Africa (CPIA) would like to join the Africa
Union and other voices in condemning the violence in Kenya following
the announcement of the results of the Presidential elections.
We are deeply
disturbed by the burning of women and children in a church in the
Rift Valley city of Eldoret and the killing of more than 600 people
countrywide;
CPIA is a regional
peace organization based in Harare, Zimbabwe, established in February
2001 and endeavours to make a contribution towards the promotion
of sustainable peace, stability and security in Africa, through
conflict prevention, management and resolution.
We have over
the past four years worked with various national and regional stakeholders
to promote the implementation of instruments on the holding of democratic
elections and work towards the prevention of pre, during and post
election conflict.
In this regard,
we would like to urge all concerned parties in Kenya to;
- Condemn
all acts of violence and immediately put an end to the loss of
lives;
- Engage in
meaningful dialogue and come up with solutions that promote unity
and national building; and
- Work out
a practical way forward that promotes reconciliation.
We would further
like to urge all Africans to take a leaf from the Kenyan experience
and as a people, to remind ourselves that the reason for holding
elections is to provide the best opportunities for enhancing participation
in the governance process and for the promotion of co-existence.
