CIO
launches campaign of intimidation against NGOs
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
October 25, 2007
Zimbabwe's notorious
Central Intelligence Organization (CIO) is on a nationwide campaign
of intimidation against civic society organizations ahead of next
year's harmonized general election.
This week, the
CIO's wing in the police, the Police Internal Security Intelligence
(PISI) visited national and provincial offices of the Progressive
Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) demanding information
about the leadership of the organization.
PTUZ Secretary General,
Raymond Majongwe yesterday said PISI agents visited their offices
in Bulawayo and Harare demanding to know the addresses, phone numbers
and other personal information about the leaders and workers of
the union.
Majongwe said the security
agents told him that they wanted to do public relations work for
the organization as an arm of the state. He said they visited their
offices in Bulawayo twice, on Monday and Wednesday and its headquarters
in Harare yesterday requesting the same information.
Another civic
organization which like the PTUZ is a member of the Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition was also called by an agent at Harare
Central Police Station demanding information about the civic group's
employees, board and the management committee.
In 2004, the
government aborted the passing into law of the Non-Governmental
Orgainsations Bill after national and international outcries
against the intention to ban NGOs.
President Robert Mugabe
did not sign the law despite the fact that it was passed into a
Bill by Parliament.
