July Provincial Highlights

  • In Manicaland, the state continues to stifle civil society activities with some civil society organisations being denied clearance to hold workshops. The few meetings that have gone on have resulted in reprisals for the villagers who would have attended. Some villagers have been threatened with eviction for attending meetings organized by NGOs.
  • All provinces, there are allegations that food aid and assistance for agricultural inputs continues to be politicized.
  • In Mashonaland East, Manicaland and Harare, there are reports that the mobile registration process is being politicized. Suspected MDC supporters have been denied registration.
  • In Masvingo and Bulawayo, there are reports of intra- party violence both within Zanu PF and the MDC.
  • There has been an increase in cases of malicious damage to property with reports of properties being set on fire in Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Midlands.
  • In Harare, some people were harassed for not attending the burial of National heroes. In Marlbereign vendors were forced to close shop and threatened with eviction if they failed to attend.
  • In Midlands - rape continues to be used as tool to punish male members of the opposition. In Sanyati a girl was raped because her father had declared interest in contesting the local government elections.
