CSO's
set a committee to engage in the SADC dialogue initiative on Zimbabwe
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
June 06, 2007
On June 5 2007, the Zimbabwean
civic organizations set a committee of 7 organizations that were
tasked, among other issues to meet the SADC mediator on Zimbabwe,
President Thabo Mbeki.
At a meeting
held in Harare, the Zimbabwe
Election Support Network (ZESN) was asked to chair the committee
and other organizations included, the Save Zimbabwe, the Center
for Peace Initiatives in Africa (CPIA), the Ecumenical Peace
Initiative (EPI), the Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ), Women's
organizations and the National
Association of NGOs (NANGO).
The committee will report
to the civil society from time to time. Most organizations that
attended the meeting highlighted that whilst they agreed to participate
in the dialogue process, they would not stop other programs to open
up the democratic space as the government of Zimbabwe is not showing
any sign of willingness to open up the democratic space in Zimbabwe.
The planning
meeting was attended by Bulawayo
Agenda, CPIA, NCA, Crisis Coalition, ZESN, NGO
human rights forum, Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Media
Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU), Catholic
Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) and National Association
for Non Governmental Organizations (NANGO).
The civil society paper
shall be presented in due course before President Mbeki's
preliminary report to SADC heads of States.
