Statement by the ZLP founder members
Zimbabwe Liberators Platform (ZLP)
August 04, 2006

This statement was published in The Zimbabwe Independent on August 04, 2006

We the founder members of the Zimbabwe Liberators Platform together with the membership of the organization at large hereby express grave concern at the appalling state of affairs and disturbing developments that have paralyzed our organization for the past two years or so.

The individuals now controlling the organization comprising Wabata Munodawafa, Happy Mariri, Celestino Gavhera, Ishamael Dube and Killian Masuku have failed to convene an elective AGM for a new leadership by the deadline of 5th December, 2005 in accordance with the provisions of the ZLP Constitution without explanation. This in itself renders their purported claim to the leadership of ZLP and any authority to speak on its behalf null and void and illegitimate. This wanton action is tantamount to the usurpation of the powers and authority of both the ZLP National Council and its General Assembly by a self-seeking group of individuals that are not accountable to the membership of our organization.

Furthermore, it has come to our attention that these same individuals, for reasons best known to themselves, have unilaterally and arbitrarily disposed of the organization's assets without authority from the ZLP and its General assembly and without consultation with the organization's structures, its membership and the funding partners. The assets include motor vehicles and office equipment such as computers, a photocopier, inter alia.

The same individuals have proceeded to sublet the ZLP Head Office, office space to their friends and acquaintances without the approval of the National Council as required by the constitution.

All these indiscretions and excesses by this unaccountable and un-elected clique render them culpable and accountable for any prejudice or loss to ZLP a\rising from their arbitrary and illegitimate actions and decisions. It is instructive to note that the assets in question were acquired through the efforts of ZLP's founder members who had since taken a back seat with the hope and expectations that the organization would continue to operate and function in accordance with both the letter and spirit of ZLP's constitution and the attendant systems and procedures.

The organization has now lost focus and direction and is beset by numerous problems. The clique now at the helm has notwithstanding, never bothered to engage the organization's organs and structures in search of solutions to the crippling problems bedeviling the organization.

We, as the founder members of ZLP, with the support of the generality of the organization's membership take it upon ourselves to demand that the organization be re-directed towards its noble founding objectives anchored in refocusing the energies of the former liberation war fighters on the original aims and objectives of the national liberation struggle that encompassed freedom, democracy, social justice, peace and respect for human dignity.

To this end, we demand that a general assembly of the organization be convened as a matter of urgency to elect a new leadership to save the organization from total collapse and re-direct its focus and energy towards its founding objectives.

We call on the totality of ZLP's membership and structures to rally behind our call for an urgent general assembly meeting in the interest of saving the organization which help so much hope and for which most of us have sacrificed so much.

For and on behalf of ZLP's founding fathers

  • Happyson Nenji (Webster Gwauya) - Founding National Chairman and former member of the National Council
  • Godfrey Rangwani (Abel Sibanda) - Founding National Secretary and former member of the National Council
  • Benard Manyadza (Parker Chipoera) - Former National Chairman and member of the National Council
  • Edson Nyarambi (Kenneth Taitezvi) - Former chairperson of advocacy committee and member of the National Council
