Concern
over arrested NCA members
National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
July 13, 2006
The NCA is worried
and concerned at the manner in which police continues to detain
its members following yesterday’s peaceful demonstrations in Harare,
Bulawayo, Mutare, Gweru and Masvingo.
Following the
release of some of the arrested late last night, a number of NCA
members still remain detained by police in Harare, Bulawayo and
Mutare as of this morning. 128 NCA members are currently in police
custody in Harare. 12 are detained in Mutare while 5 are being held
by police in Bulawayo. Some few members were released yesterday
without any charges leveled against them. Initially throughout the
country 411 members had been arrested.
The NCA reiterates
that its members are being held illegally considering that they
did nothing that threatens public order and security. As proof to
this, the police have not yet charged the arrested NCA members.
In Harare, the police have even denied the NCA lawyer access to
the arrested NCA members. Difficulties are also being encountered
in trying to provide food for the detained that are currently languishing
in police cells without any charges being pressed on them. It will
also be strange for the state to solicit for the so-called Admission
of Guilt from the arrested considering that they have not committed
any crime.
For more information
on the fate of the arrested, lawyers who are handling the cases
may be contacted on phone numbers: 091 234 891 and 091218754 (Harare),
011634 732 (Bulawayo) and 011 210 849 (Mutare).
