Police
pick up NCA members demonstrating against a lavish birthday of Mugabe
National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
February 23, 2006
Police have
picked up members of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
who were demonstrating against the holding of Mugabe’s lavish birthday
scheduled for Mutare this weekend.
An estimated 60 members of the NCA were shoved into four trucks,
including one belonging to the city council around midday at corner
First Street and Nelson Mandela Street. About 100 members were taking
part in the peaceful demonstration. Upon seeing the armed riot police
coming for them, the marchers sat down fearing for brutal attacks
from the police. The police had an easy task of rounding them up
and eventually arresting them.
We believe there
is a genuine cause for demonstrating against the state sponsoring
a birthday bash of an individual, let alone a person who has run
down the economy of the country.
Instead of diverting all those billions of dollars to avert hunger
and to jump start the economy the regime decides to sponsor Mugabe’s
82nd birthday party in Mutare.
Those arrested
are being held at the Harare Central Police Station. No injuries
have been reported so far.
The NCA will
not be deterred by such intimidating tactics. We will not get out
of the streets unless our goal is achieved. We remain committed
to a democratic constitution.
