Police
brutally descend on NCA women on Mugabe's birthday
National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
February 21, 2006
The National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA) would like to express its deep concern
over the manner in which the police today brutally assaulted NCA
female members who had demonstrated today as President Mugabe was
celebrating his 82nd birthday.
Over 200 NCA female members had marched from Fourth Street Bus Terminus
with the intention of getting to the Munhumutapa Building to meet
Mugabe to tell him that they want a constitution that protects,
among other things women rights.
In response the police blocked them and started beating them at
the Parliament Building. Seventy three (73) NCA members were eventually
arrested and asked to lie down in the streets near the Africa Unity
Square and 12 were seriously injured. Those arrested who include
Nixon Nyikadzino the NCA Field Officer, are being held at the Harare
Central Police Station. The injured are being attended to at a private
hospital.
The NCA will not be deterred by such intimidating tactics. We will
not get out of the streets unless our goal is achieved. We remain
committed to a democratic constitution.
