State's
persecution of NCA members intensifies
National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
January 05, 2006
The National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA) notes with deep grieve that the regime
is living to its promise that it would make life difficult for the
NCA. This has manifested itself in the arrest of Last Maengahama,
the NCA Vice National Spokesperson for yet an unclear reason. No
charge has been preferred against him yet.
He has reporting to the Harare Police Station since Tuesday 3 January,
2006 only to be told to report the following day.
Sources in
the police say the establishment would want to link him with the
so-called petrol bombing of a police officer last November when
NCA was demonstrating against Senatorial Election imposed on us
by the unpopular Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Number 17 Act.
We find it very
mind-boggling that it took police more than two months to arrest
Maengahama if they were really serious about the petrol-bomb. We
have not even seen the person who is said to have been petrol bombed.
While we disassociate
ourselves from any violent demonstrations we want to be on record
that we will not be silenced in condemning the amendment which the
African Commission for Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) has even
strongly condemned.
We join the ACHPR in calling for the repealing of all unjust pieces
of legislations such as Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Number
17 Act, the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act
(AIPPA) and the Public Order and Security Act (POSA).
A new constitution now.
