HARARE - Zimbabwe
police on Friday freed trade unionists who were arrested and charged
earlier this week with public disorder when they tried to march
against worsening poverty in the southern African country, their
lawyer said.
Lawyer Alec
Muchadehama told Reuters that some of the 119 members of the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) had been set free while others would
be released soon.
The ZCTU members
were charged under the country's tough security laws, which critics
say were crafted to stifle dissent and opposition to President Robert
Mugabe's government.
Muchadehama
said police would proceed by way of summons against the group, which
usually takes months.
"Some of them
have been released while some of them are actually going through
the paperwork (before being released) as I speak and we expect everyone
to be out today," Muchadehama said.
