Madhuku
and NCA members released
National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
November
11, 2005
The NCA Chairperson
Lovemore Madhuku and other NCA members were last night released
from police custody without any charges – thereby proving that the
regime is just after intimidating its citizens.
Madhuku had
been detained at Stodart Police Station on Tuesday. Other members
were arrested earlier on Saturday after taking part in the NCA organised
demonstrations in all major cities in the country.
We congratulate
the Attorney General’s Office for finally seeing sense. It is illegal
to deprive someone of their freedom on that grounds that the police
are investigating him/her. Investigations must be made first before
a citizen is arrested.
We view the
arrests as well calculated acts of intimidation by the regime coming
after the NCA’s successful staging of nationwide peaceful demonstrations
last Saturday calling for a democratic constitution that can help
bring democracy and prosperity to Zimbabwe.
We are consulting
our lawyers with the view to suing the state for unlawfully detaining
our members in police cells that are unfit for human habitation.
Despite all
this intimidation, the NCA remain focused on fighting for a democratic
constitution.
