  • Concern over the continued incarceration of demonstrators
    National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
    November 07, 2005

The National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) is deeply concerned by the continued detention of their members by the police. The NCA members were arrested on Saturday while peacefully demonstrating to push for a people driven, democratic constitution and in condemnation of pre-determined senatorial elections set for November 26, 2005.

Fourteen people are still in detention at the Harare Central Police Station and their friends have not been allowed to give them food since their arrest. In other cities, NCA members are still locked up. In Bulawayo there is (one), Mutare (nine) Masvingo (four) and Gweru (six).

These people were arrested while expressing their feelings, which is their right recognised by the current defective constitution.

If these people have a case to answer why are the police dragging their feet and not taking them to court to answer any charges?

The demonstrations are a determined protest action against the acute state of bad governance that has brought untold suffering to the people of Zimbabwe and will continue as long as the situation does not change.
