  • NCA not responsible for bombing of police post
    National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
    November 06, 2005

The NCA dissociates itself from the bombing of the police post in central Harare on Saturday 5 November 2005.

As the NCA, we find it disgusting, shocking and extremely worrying that statements attributed to National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena, are linking the bombing of the police post to NCA organised demonstrations that took place in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare and Masvingo on 5th November 2005.

Contrary to what is suggested in statements attributed to Ass Comm Bvudzijena, the NCA organized demonstrations were peaceful protest actions without an iota of violence. The bombing of the police post is a criminal act that was perpetrated by criminal elements who acted in a context that had nothing to do with the NCA demonstrations. It is unfortunate that while NCA members were demonstrating to push for a noble national cause, some criminal elements decided to indulge in this criminal act meant to disturb the smooth operations of police along Harare’s First street. These criminal elements, not peaceful demonstrators, are the ones who must be hunted down in connection with the bombing of the police post.

For its part, the NCA has never, shall never and will never advocate for violence. The NCA believes in peaceful means of protest. It is in line with this belief that the Saturday demonstrations were organized. The demonstrations were largely successful. The only mishap was that police moved in to disturb some of the demonstrations, arresting 18 peaceful demonstrators in the process. The 18 are still in police custody and are yet to be formally charged.

Considering that the arrested NCA members are being held for exercising their right to free expression, the NCA calls for their immediate release.

As for the police officer who got seriously injured as a result of the bombing of the police post by criminal elements, the NCA wishes him a speedy recovery.
