NCA
statement on the arrest of Nixon Nyikadzino
National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
July 26, 2005
Six plain clothes
policemen from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Law and
Order Section have this afternoon arrested Nixon Nyikadzino, the
NCA Harare region field officer.
While the officers did not officially specify his ‘crime’ our sources
at the Harare Central Police Station where he is being interrogated
say the arrest is in connection with last week’s demonstration against
the Constitution Amendment (No.17) Bill.
Nyikadzino was picked up from the NCA offices in full view of his
colleagues and Lovemore Madhuku, the NCA chairperson.
Madhuku offered to be arrested but the officers said they wanted
to interview Nyikadzino.
The National Constitutional Assembly is heavily disturbed by the
continued harassment of its members who took part in last Thursday’s
demonstration.
Since last week all drivers of the public vehicles associated with
the demonstrations have been subjected to various ways of harassment
such as physical assaults and threats by suspected members of the
police force.
We view this horrendous behaviour by the regime as a way of trying
to intimidate Zimbabweans from participating in issues that affect
them.
Despite all
these setbacks the NCA will continue with demonstrations against
the unpopular Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 17) Bill gazetted
earlier this month.
We will not stop our way of showing our displeasure over the imposition
of the Bill.
Unless they kill us all, we will continue demonstrating against
the imposition of amendments to the current constitution without
the involvement of people.
