Statement on the refusal by the Supreme Court to declare police holding cells conditions inhuman and degrading
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
July 20, 2005

The National Constitutional Assembly N.C.A. deplores the failure by the Supreme Court to declare the filthy and unsanitary conditions in holding cells of the police as inhuman and degrading.

The N.C.A. laments the failure of the Zimbabwe Constitution to reflect international human rights standards, and the resultant lack of enthusiasm in promoting human rights in state organs. The current constitutional dispensation places priority in upholding State political objectives at the expense of the human rights of the people under the State's control.

The N.C.A. is certain that only a people driven democratic Constitution will bring about a culture of promoting and respecting human rights to their full potential.
