MDC youths run amok in Harare South
Zimbabwe Peace Project
April 20, 2005

A group of 7 unidentified MDC youths sporting t-shirts emblazoned with their party's colours and symbol yesterday allegedly went on the rampage in the Waterfalls-Prospect residential areas claiming they were on the hunt for unnamed Zanu PF activists they asserted to have caused terror in the constituency in the un-up to the March general elections.

According to eyewitnesses, the youths, who were evidently on an alcohol-induced daze, harassed vegetable vendors at Cheviot road shopping centre before proceeding towards Irvines Poultry complex where they claimed one of their intended quarry, JF, a war veteran was hiding.

The war veteran, it is claimed, led a Zanu PF 'voter education' committee that terrorised newly resettled people in the surrounding farms in the constituency. The committee, according to information at hand, was based at the Vivian Mwashita High School, situated on a farm she owns. Mwashita is a strong Zanu PF activist and war veteran popularly known for her political fights with Margaret Dongo, who contested as an independent candidate for Harare Central in the just ended general elections.

James Mushonga of the opposition party lost to Magadzire Nyanhongo of the ruling party after polling 10716 votes to the later's 11545 ballots in a tightly contested race.

The youths, reports say, terrorised and harassed anyone they found wearing Zanu PF campaign apparel in the above-mentioned residential areas, but were reluctant to visit the claimed Zanu PF base less than a kilometre from the Irvines complex.

The youths allegedly assaulted KD, a vegetable vendor of no known political affiliation at 7pm yesterday near Cheviot shops after he failed to furnish the alleged assailants with information as to the whereabouts of the purported Zanu PF terror gang they claimed was hiding in the area.
