  • MDC supporters assaulted in Gweru urban
    Zimbabwe Peace Project
    April 13, 2005

Political intolerance has reared its ugly head in Gweru, after it emerged that Zanu PF is using youths located in ‘special’ camps to beat up MDC supporters, apparently in retribution in the Midlands city.

The attacks are however sporadic, perhaps owing to statements from the police that they were on ‘high alert’ for incidents of post-election violence.

Two MDC supporters, EM and JM were last night allegedly assaulted by 7 unidentified Zanu PF supporters sporting t-shirts emblazoned with the constituency’s losing candidate for Zanu PF, Enos Size, at Ascot bar.

According to eyewitness accounts, the two were celebrating the MDC’s parliamentary victory, after local businessman Timothy Mkahlera polled 8011 votes against Size’s 5689.

It is said an unidentified man used his mobile phone to call the alleged assailants who immediately arrived from one of their bases opposite the 6 Maintenance Company, an army establishment.

Four of the said assailants allegedly used sjamboks in the assault, which according to eyewitnesses was thorough. The assailants were then said to have beat a hasty retreat in a blue Nissan Hardbody truck whose number plates were not discernible.

The said victims, it is said, declined to report to the police fearing further retribution.
