  • MDC, ZANU PF supporters clash in Nyanga
    Zimbabwe Peace Project
    April 13, 2005

MDC supporters are reportedly causing mayhem in Nyanga, following the arrest of MDC losing candidate Douglas Mwonzora and 15 other MDC activists on allegations of political violence on the 10th.

The opposition party’s supporters, mostly youths are said to be waylaying and subsequently attacking Zanu PF supporters who they accuse of having caused Mwonzora’s arrest.

Police details arrested Mwonzora and 15 MDC supporters after they allegedly caused disturbances at Mangondoza Hotel and surrounding areas apparently in frustration following the MDC’s loss in Nyanga.

Zanu PF’s Paul Kadzima polled 12 602 votes against Mwonzora’s 9 360 in the just ended general poll.

AN, whose political affiliation is not known was allegedly severely beaten by six unidentified MDC supporters near Mangondoza hotel yesterday after the alleged assailants accused the victim of taking part in Sunday’s melee that led to Mwonzora’s arrest.

Meanwhile, Mwonzora and his supporters are reportedly still in police custody after police laid charges of inciting public violence under the Public Order and Security Act. They are expected to be brought to the courts today in Mutare.
