Zanu PF has
allegedly intensified its crackdown on perceived and known Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC) supporters following reports that 15
people have been displaced by war veterans and Zanu PF supporters
in Mutasa North.
This comes against
the background of massive displacements reported by the ZPP on April
4 in which 21 MDC supporters were evicted from their homes in Makoni
East. It is said unidentified Zanu PF activists are carrying out
door-to-door 'witch-hunts' in a bid to 'sniff out' MDC supporters.
The MDC's parliamentary
candidate Evelyn Masaiti garnered 6605 votes against Zanu PF's Michael
Nyambuya, a retired army boss.
The 15 alleged
victims are: PS of Ruchera village, JS, his wife R and two children
(also of Ruchera, MM (from the London Store area), BC and FC (both
from Nyarumburwe village), WC and CC (from Samanga village), BK
(from Ward 8 in Makaratsa village), SM (from Ward 21, Daze village,
under Chief Tangwena's jurisdiction in Gaeresi), EJ (Ward 6 in Samanga),
and TB and VM (Ward 5, Muparutsa village).
According to
confirmed reports, a manhunt for MM from the London Store area along
the Rusape Nyanga road has been launched by local Zanu PF leaders
who accused the said victim of campaigning for the MDC. The victim
claims he has been living in the bush for two weeks and has been
living on maize cobs filched from maize fields on his way to Mutare,
and hand outs from well wishers.
Also according
to reports, some of the displaced people in the constituency have
taken to living in plastic shacks as destitutes at Hauna Growth
Point in the Honde Valley.
