Zimbabwe
liberators platform mourns Dr Zvobgo
Zimbabwe
Liberators Platform (ZLP)
August 26, 2004
TThe Zimbabwe
Liberators Platform [ZLP] joins the Zvobgo family and the nation
in mourning the death of Dr Eddison Jonas Mudadirwa Zvobgo whose
passing away on 22 August 2004 robbed Zimbabwe of its gallant and
illustrious leader.
Zvobgo distinguished
himself as a political leader [during the liberation struggle and
after independence], a visionary, an eminent lawyer of international
repute, an academic and an efficient and effective Cabinet minister.
He contributed
immensely to the development of the country since 1980 and being
one of Zimbabwe’s sharpest legal brains, he made a huge impact on
the country’s legal system:
- Inheritance
laws.
- The country’s
constitution.
- The judiciary.
- Balanced
legal analysis of Bills before they were enacted by Parliament.
His contributions
would have made a significant difference to the upcoming Non-Governmental
Organisation [NGO] Bill.
Those who participated
in the war of liberation would remember the leading role Zvobgo
played in various capacities including that of ZANU secretary for
information and publicity and the spokesman for the Patriotic Front
during the Lancaster House talks in London in 1979.
During his stint
as Cabinet minister spanning 20 years, he left indelible footprints
on the ministries of local government and housing; justice, legal
and parliamentary affairs; public service and mines. This contribution
will remain his enduring legacy for future generations.
Many people
would remember Dr Zvobgo’s incisive contributions to debate on national
issues. He had the capacity to argue convincingly and one did not
have to agree with him but had to respect his views. Zvobgo was
endowed with a remarkable sense of wit, humour and sarcasm.
ZLP particularly
feels the pain of losing Dr Zvobgo because above all else, he interacted
with the organisation on several occasions with a view to finding
legal, peaceful and lasting solutions to the country’s current crisis.
The man was approachable, ready to listen; available and prepared
to give advice not only to ZLP but also to many people and groups
across the political, economic, social, cultural and racial divide.
He was a man of the people and the people will miss him.
Go well Dr Zvobgo
and rest in eternal peace-[RIP]
