SASU condemns Zimbabwean Police and ZANU PF
Southern African Students Union (SASU)
May 21, 2004

The Southern African Students Union (SASU) condemns, in the strongest of terms, the uncalled for behavior by the Zimbabwe Republic Police during the attack at the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) headquarters in Harare.

The MDC headquarters was yesterday attacked and severely damaged by ZANU PF thugs and militia who later looted some of the opposition party’s property worth millions of dollars.

The ZANU PF people were allegedly demonstrating against Chimanimani constituency MP Roy Bennett’s attack on NON-constituency MP Patrick Chinamasa in Parliament on Tuesday after the latter verbally abused the former on racial grounds.

What is shocking about yesterday’s events is that the damage and looting of MDC property by ZANU PF people was done in full and undisturbed view of the police. Members of the police force stood powerless, enjoying and entertaining themselves with the nazi-ist, racist, mafia tactics employed by the ZANU PF militia.

The condoning of violence by the Police force of Zimbabwe constitute total disregard of the African Leaders and SADC’s traditional norms and values of living together in harmony. Our fears are that ZANU PF’s agenda of igniting the racial and tribal conflict is aimed at persecuting the minorities and is against the SADC convention.

SASU is concerned with the ever-increasing levels of violence in Zimbabwe ahead of the General election in March 2005. We view the actions of the police yesterday as an indirect way of promoting racial and ethnic violence which in not healthy for the SADC region.

We accordingly call upon the authorities in Zimbabwe to restore the rule of law and basic freedoms to all Zimbabweans ahead of the General election in March 2005 as a way of stopping the unacceptable behavior of loosing human life through violence.

Secretary General
