Car
donation from CABS
Zimbabwe
Civil Education Trust (ZIMCET)
June 19, 2002
The
Mashonalands have been the epicenter for violence dating back to
2000 soon after the referendum and many people have lost their homes
and hard earned properties. Non-governmental organizations have
been labeled allies of the opposition MDC party and therefore were
denied access to operate in the three provinces. However ZIMCET
defied all odds and has managed to penetrate the provinces. The
Mashonaland community received the peace message with great enthusiasm
and they indeed agreed that it was time for people to put aside
their political differences and concentrate on developmental issues.
As ZIMCET’s
civic education continues throughout the country, a local bank Central
African Building Society (CABS) was impressed with the good work
being done to promote peace and donated a Hyundai car to ZIMCET.
This is a land mark achievement not to ZIMCET alone but to other
non-governmental organizations as well. While many organizations
rely on donor funding from the West, the CABS donation to ZIMCET
redefines relations between non-govermental organizations and the
local business community. CABS realized that for their business
to thrive, they need a peaceful environment where people are united
and all work towards one goal, that is development.
Of late, relations
between the government and non-governmental organizations have collapsed
as the government accuses NGOs of spearheading Western interest
because that is where their money comes from. However, CABS donation
brings a new face to non-governmental organizations showing that
they are doing meaningful work for the people of Zimbabwe not for
the West.
ZIMCET would
like to thank CABS again for their support and hope to see other
companies supporting other NGOS in ensuring the achievement of their
goals, aims and objectives in the society.
