Constitutional
feedback meeting
National Youth Development Trust

The National
Youth Development Trust (NYDT) held a constitutional feedback meeting
at Mpopoma Hall on Thursday October 3, 2013. The meeting was chaired
by the local youth councillor and facilitated by Godwin Phiri of
Intscha.com. Citizenship rights in the new constitution
were a key issue in the meeting as a number young people were interested
in claiming the right to dual citizenship. They however, said they
did not have sufficient information on the procedures to follow.
Young people
in the meeting felt that most provisions in the constitution and
how they are being implemented were not in sync. They gave the example
that the constitution guarantees the right to freedom of association
and assembly yet laws like the Public
Order and Security Act (POSA) remain fully functional in place.
They also lamented the slow implementation of the constitution,
citing that most commissions are yet to be set up. The youths called
for the urgent set up of the Peace and Reconciliation Commission
highlighting that there were issues that needed to be dealt with.
They made reference to the fact that they were directly and indirectly
affected by Gukurahundi and subsequent electoral violence that had
claimed the lives of their loved ones.
Although the
young women in the meeting commended the progress towards commitment
to women empowerment in the new constitution, they highlighted that
the composition of the new cabinet was not reflective of such commitment.
This, they said was an indication of the insincerity of government
towards women development issues. The young women however, encouraged
each other to empower themselves through education as it is a powerful
tool for personal development. The constitutional feedback meetings
are conducted by the NYDT at a ward level in an effort to assist
young people know their constitutional rights and exercise them.
