YAT imparts life skills on Zengeza youths
Youth Agenda Trust
September 05, 2013

Youths from Zengeza in Chitungwiza are receiving training on life skills from Youth Agenda Trust (YAT) as part of the project, Breaking the Culture of Silence, which has been running since 2012 and stretches to 2014. The life skills training comes against the backdrop of young people who are increasingly engaging in risky lifestyles that are threatening their physical, spiritual and mental well being. The 3-day training is specifically covering areas such as HIV and AIDS, gender, culture, drug and alcohol abuse, gender based violence and their relation to HIV/AIDS. The training is also touching on all aspects of sexual reproductive health including health rights and health activism. The training has attracted 25 youths from 5 different wards in Zengeza who are being mentored to take up leadership positions in their communities and spearhead programmes that are aimed at reducing the spread of HIV and to educate their peers on sexual and reproductive health.

The trained youths will also form the core of community peer educators who will share knowledge and experience with their peers. The youths will also be tasked with popularising New Generation Leadership, an approach that has been embraced by the region, to ensure that local leadership leads the fight from the front as the country strives to reduce HIV to zero.

The training ends tomorrow (Friday) and will see doctors, counselors and social workers interacting and sharing their knowledge with the young people. Next week, YAT will take the training to Epworth and seeks to attract youths from all the seven wards in the area.

Some of the training materials were provided by SAFAIDS and Zimbabwe Doctors for Human Rights.
