We
are ready for elections
Youth Agenda Trust
July 08, 2013
Youths in Chegutu
have declared that they are prepared
for the July 31 harmonised elections and send clear message
to under performing politicians who have been ignoring the plight
of young people for a long time. Over 400 youths converged at Hartley
2 primary school in Chegutu and took part in the Play Your Vote
Sports Tournament that was organised by Youth Agenda Trust where
they vowed to kick out politicians who have been taking the electorate
for granted for many years.
The youths said
they will not tolerate any forms of violence and said that they
are ready to defend the outcome of the elections which has been
manipulated by some unruly politicians in the past elections. They
said that any attempt to rig the elections will not be condoned
and called on the international community to keep a close eye on
the government to ensure the polls deliver a credible and transparent
election.
Speaking to
Youth Agenda Trust on Saturday, aspiring ward 6 councillor for Chegutu,
Shepherd Jack, took a swipe at unscrupulous elements who are trying
to manipulate the electoral process through acts such as tampering
with the voters roll.
“The youth
in Chegutu have spoken, they do not want a violent election. They
want a free, fair and credible election. We are ready as the youth
to participate in the governance of our country,” said Jack.
Addressing the youths, YAT programmes manager Lawrence Mashungu
urged youths to be vigilant and to prepare themselves for various
mind games that might be employed to frustrate them on the day of
voting. "Learning from the past elections, a lot of dirty tactics
will be employed to frustrate you but you must soldier on,"
Mashungu said.
The youth said
the time for reckoning has come for a government that has failed
to give them jobs and to put food on their tables. They called upon
youth countrywide to participate peacefully in the elections and
deliver a government that represent their aspirations.
