National Youth Development Trust
August 17, 2012
Youth representatives
from different political parties and media houses convened in Bulawayo
to deliberate on peace issues at a Political Parties Forum organized
by the National Youth Development Trust (NYDT). The forum, which
was attended by representatives from political parties, NYDT membership
and media practitioners awarded young people drawn from four political
parties, that is, ZANU PF, MDC - T, MDC and ZAPU an opportunity
to interrogate at length the best means of complimenting each other's
efforts bringing about sustainable peace.
To kick start
the forum, the Secretary Generals from all the political parties
gave a contextual analysis of the political trends in Zimbabwe and
also highlighted their respective efforts of promoting peace. Other
issues discussed included the role of the Zimbabwean media in either
perpetuating or curbing political violence. In all discussions,
all the parties acknowledged that the youth have been immensely
involved in political violence and thus agreed that there was need
to build a spirit of coexistence, tolerance and diversity within
the political contours in the country.
Part of the
recommendations brought forth by the youths included the need for
tolerance and unity of purpose amongst youths from all political
parties and responsibility by the political leaders. The need for
young people to have a clear understanding of their respective political
party ideologies was also underscored so as to enrich the level
of political debate among young people. The youths also highlighted
the need for more political party forums as avenues for promoting
constructive interaction amongst youth political actors and enhancing
appreciation of diversity amongst young people.
