Youth Agenda Trust on president Robert Mugabe's birthday
Youth Agenda Trust
February 24, 2012

Youth Agenda Trust would like to take this opportunity to wish President Robert Mugabe a happy birthday and many more years to come.

However, we are disturbed by news that at least US$1 Million dollars will be used at the birthday celebrations set for Mutare this week. Since the launch of the infamous 21st February Movement celebrations, Mugabe and his party have been taking the opportunity to loot state resources at the expense of the millions who are suffering today, many of whom live on less than a dollar a day, due to rampant corruption and mal-administration by his Zanu PF party. It is also due to Mugabe's misrule that today unemployment among youths in the country is over 80 percent yet money that can be used to resuscitate industries is being used to buy meat for people to feast in one day. As Youth Agenda we condemn in the strongest terms the continued abuse of taxpayer's money by an unrepentant regime that has thrived on milking hapless citizens. We also denounce the patronization and manipulation of youths by the party during these celebrations.

It is on this backdrop that YAT calls upon all young people to refuse to be perpetually manipulated by this regime and ensure that they are active participants in shaping the Zimbabwe they want. We take this opportunity to remind President Mugabe that as he reflects on a lifetime working for Zimbabwe, he should be courageous enough to tell members of his party that he no longer has anything more to offer the country that he dearly loves and that it is time for the young generation to take the country up from the pit it is heading to.
