  • Statement on MDC-T Youth Assembly president's arrest
    Youth Agenda Trust
    October 06, 2011

Youth Agenda Trust would like to express its concern on the recent arrest of MDC-T Youth Assembly leader Solomon Madzore over the death of Inspector Petros Mutedza who was murdered in Glen View over two months ago.

It is regrettable to note that if the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) had a genuine criminal case against Madzore, why would they take so long to arrest him yet he was not on the run. This recent action by the police not only cast their professionalism into doubt, but also serves to show how they act on political instead of criminal instinct.

This latest incident, should come as a wake-up call to JOMIC and the facilitator to the Global Political Agreement Jacob Zuma that the road to a democratic Zimbabwe is still long and winding and if they are at all interested in creating a conducive environment for free and democratic elections, there is need for serious security sector reform especially the ZRP.

As Youth Agenda Trust we urge the Zimbabwe Republic Police to carry out their duties in a transparent manner and not act on political pressure.

We would also like to urge principals in the Global Political Agreement to ensure that there is law and order in the country and that no-one party should wield excessive powers in the coalition to the extent that some have the power to influence the course of justice at the expense of others.

YAT also implores all parties to the GPA to show their commitment to the full implementation of the Inclusive Government by actions and not cheap talk and we would like to reiterate that elections under this current political madness will be rejected by young people.

Lastly, we encourage the SADC facilitator to unconditionally engage with the civic society in Zimbabwe if the election roadmap crafted by the regional bloc is to succeed because the current political situation in the country requires more than the 3 principals.
